Two Portland-area Safeway stores — one in Milwaukie and one in Gresham — will close their doors by August 28.

A company spokesman told the Oregonian the stores were underperforming.

The shuttering of the Gresham leaves residents with few healthy options nearby.

“There are a lot of families in Rockwood that relied on Safeway for their essentials, and it’s yet another store to go away. It’s a gut punch,” said Josh Fuhrer, executive director of the Gresham Redevelopment Commission.

Since the mid-1990s, four major grocery chains have closed in the area, and other chains haven’t shown interest to selling groceries to tens of thousands of potential customers, he said.

Residents in northwest Gresham suffer from low wages and the struggles of eating healthily, according to a Multnomah County official quoted by the Oregonian.
