Walmart Stores Inc. and Target have announced Portland-area stores with a focus on groceries, which analysts predict will have major consequences on existing grocery stores.

In March, Target unveiled new grocery sections at stores in Tigard and Tanasbourne and launched expansions at its Hillsboro, Southeast Portland and Happy Valley stores that should wrap up in July. Walmart upped the ante this week, floating the possibility of swarming the tri-county area with as many as 17 stores.

Grocery analysts predict lethal consequences to local operators big and small. Regional chains such as Fred Meyer, Safeway and Albertsons stand to lose the most market share, they say. Others worry about smaller operators, be it one-shop mom-and-pops or independents such as Bale’s Thriftways, which has two stores, or Zupan’s Markets, which has three.
