Walmart opened its first West Coast standalone grocery stores in West Linn and Beaverton, and plans to open a third in Gresham in August.

The often controversial retailer is making an aggressive expansion into smaller facilities, with plans for at least 80 groceries to open this year. It is also planning even smaller Market Express stores in urban areas.

A 2011 economic analysis the company commissioned for the Portland area suggested there was room for 17 different Walmart stores. Wall said that once the study identified the opportunity in the market, the ability to act on it by acquiring vacant stores in the Portland area occurred quicker than elsewhere on the West Coast.
