Portland startup Puppet Labs acquired Cloudsmith, its second announced acquisition after Marionette Collective in 2010. Puppet Labs has raised nearly $46 million in outside investment recently.

Portland startup Puppet Labs acquired Cloudsmith, its second announced acquisition after Marionette Collective in 2010. Puppet Labs has raised nearly $46 million in outside investment recently.

Puppet’s open source software simplifies management of data centers and large computing networks. It’s been expanding rapidly and had 110 employees at its Pearl District headquarters in January, when it landed a $30 million investment from VMware.

Cloudsmith makes software called Geppetto, based on Puppet’s own open source tools. In a blog post this morning, Cloudsmith founder and chief executive Mitch Sonies said that the deal quietly closed last month. He wrote that Cloudsmith set out to build an open source product for an existing community, and that Puppet was a good cultural fit.
