Portland-based software company Puppet Labs raised $30 million from Silicon Valley’s VMware.

Just two or three years ago, cloud was more hype than technology, but now that’s no longer the case, said Luke Kanies, Puppet Labs’ founder and chief executive.

Now it’s seeing real adoption of cloud and virtualization, but in widely varying degrees at different companies. “It’s a bit more chaos than we expected,” Mr. Kanies said. While that brings challenges, Puppet Labs has benefited so far.

It didn’t expect to be able to land its first contract over $1 million until 2014, or later this year at the earliest, but now it’s already closed several deals that size, he said. “We’ve got an opportunity to be the next big, public IT management vendor for the next 10, 15 years.”
