Google, Cisco Systems and VMware have invested $8.5 million in Portland-based network management company Puppet Labs.

Puppet’s software helps administer large data networks. CEO Luke Kanies said Cisco and VMware — which make networking hardware and software, respectively — hope Puppet’s tools will encourage their own clients to upgrade their networks by simplifying network administration. 

Google uses Puppet’s software to help manage its internal computer network, but Kanies said Google is acting as an institutional investor in this round and won’t be a strategic partner. 

Oregon startups are attracting more outside investment than in any year since the dot-com era. Software remains a small part of the state’s overall economy, though, and it could take years for the current crop of entrepreneurial successes to have broader implications in Oregon.
