The agency that holds the purse strings for care of Oregon Health Plan members criticized the state’s system for distributing money to coordinated care organizations.

The Aug. 7 letter from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says the state is employing “high-risk practices” as well as projections that “differ greatly” from those used by the CCOs themselves.

The letter seems to significantly curb the flexibility considered crucial to the reforms — so much so that one CCO executive described it as “a punch to the gut.”
