Portland-based Mercy Corps backed a mobile prescription reminder app in the Gaza Strip as part of a Startup Weekend.

The Portland-based nonprofit has long supported economic development throughout the globe. But a partnership announced today with Seattle-based Startup Weekend will root its focus on the tech sphere, an arena it first entered about two years ago.

The organizations first worked together two years ago, when Mercy Corps helped sponsor a Tel Aviv event, Dwonch said. It later backed subsequent events and offered the top ideas grant money, with funding from the Google-backed Arab Developer Network Initiative.

Take Your Medicine, the prescription reminder app, was one those ventures, launched at a recent Startup Weekend in the Gaza Strip. It, along with a sports social media site and a freelance jobs network secured a total $10,000 in grants.
