Portland-based Mercy Corps founded Gaza Sky Geeks, a new startup accelerator that is the first in its area.

Jordanian accelerator Oasis500 has committed cash, mentorship and a promise to co-host the initial class of startups with Gaza Sky Geeks.

That means nearly 17 months after opening, the new accelerator program will at last begin to look at candidates for its first class. As many as half a dozen Gaza startups will eventually spend four months of tutelage in Gaza and Amman, Jordan, where they’ll deepen their knowledge about product concepts, consumer reach and implementation. Aside from teaching this initial class of budding entrepreneurs, mentors at both Oasis500 and Gaza Sky Geeks will also link them to a network of investors for post-incubation financial help.
