San Francisco-based Recology, a 100% employee-owned resource-recovery company, acquired Portland-based Sunset Garbage Collection Inc., a refuse-hauling company that employs 12 full-time workers and serves 1,600 customers in Southeast Portland and 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Clackamas County.

The sale, which closed on Oct. 31, 2023, included 18 collection vehicles, a 1.23-acre truck yard and offices at 9035 Henderson Street in Portland. The company has been rebranded Recology Clackamas following the purchase.

A spokesperson for Recology said the details of the purchase, including the price, were confidential.

Recology is a recycling- and composting-first garbage collector. According to Recology’s 2023 Sustainability Report, the company diverted 1.3 million tons of recyclable and compostable materials away from landfills in 2022.

Recology provides refuse collection, recycling, curbside composting, and outreach and education to 136 communities in California, Oregon and Washington, and employs 3,800 employee-owners.

In addition to its garbage-collection operation, Sunset Garbage Collection also collects food scraps from restaurants and other food-related businesses.

“This is a local company with a great history of providing superior customer service,” said Recology CEO Salvatore Coniglio in a press release. “Their outstanding work and focus on recycling make this a great fit for Recology.”

Chris Carey, general manager of Recology’s Northern Oregon operations, will oversee the Recology Clackamas operation.

Editor’s Note. A previous version of this article said Recology recycled or composted over half of the refuse collected by the company. Those numbers are only for Recology’s San Francisco location.
