The Portland City Council is considering a new rate schedule to cut garbage and recycling rates.

Under the proposed rate schedule, residents would pay $28.10 a month for weekly recycling and yard debris/compost service and every-other-week pickup of a 32-gallon can, down from the current $28.20 per month.

In general, rates are going down about 1 percent due to lower costs of the city’s composting program. That’s because the cost of collecting food scraps and yard debris has decreased, as composting those materials is cheaper than disposing of them in a landfills.
