One option: locking in tuition at each student’s rate his/her freshman year.

One option for the University of Oregon board of trustees looking to limit financial burden of higher education: locking in tuition at each student’s rate his/her freshman year.
Vice President for Enrollment Management Roger Thompson will introduce the idea at meetings at the end of this week.
“It builds certainty and encourages a four-year graduation rate and lets the families have stability knowing they have a scholarship during that time,” he said. “If a student goes off the rails and doesn’t perform academically, we don’t renew the scholarship, but that doesn’t happen very often.”
On the other hand, the tuition guarantee ties administrators’ hands, because they can’t quickly raise tuition to deal with an unanticipated expense.

It’s uncertain if the proposal will affect bringing in sought-after students.
