Salem businessman Casey Campbell sold Casey’s Hotdogs, but isn’t retiring as he planned.
Casey’s Hotdogs, known for its burgers, fries, soups, sandwiches and of course, hot dogs, started as a food cart called Star Spangled Hot Dog Company in 1977. But within a year Campbell bought out his fellow firefighter partners and ran with it.
His business endured harsh winters outdoors, disapproving competitors, mini-crime waves and the exodus of Courthouse Square. It also became a downtown hot spot luring big names such as Gov. John Kitzhaber, who used to go in every Saturday for a hot dog, a beer and a chat with his constituents. Not to mention the long list of famous people, whose autographed photos line the walls of the restaurant, that have enjoyed his catering.
