A group of downtown Salem property and business owners created a petition against future actions by the city on installing meters downtown.

Petitioners need to collect valid signatures amounting to at least 15 percent of the votes cast in the last mayoral election. City spokesman Mike Gotterba said that means they will need 5,688 valid signatures.

The petition is a reaction to a city parking task force recommendation to Salem City Council that downtown’s free, on-street parking be replaced by metered parking. That recommendation is not scheduled to be considered by the council until late August.
