Public sector retirements are up 54 percent this year as Oregon legislature seeks pension reform.

PERS spokesman David Crosley said 2,305 public sector employees retired last year between January and June. This year: 3,539.

The Legislature and Gov. John Kitzhaber have been pushing since January for benefit cuts that will make the system less expensive. One bill, which will reduce cost of living increases for retirees, has passed. Kitzhaber is pushing for further cuts that will create long-term savings, but so far, no deal has been struck.
