One in four employed families in Oregon face a severe housing burden, according to a new report.
In Oregon, more than 151,000 families face a severe housing burden, amounting to 26 percent of all working households — 3 percentage points higher than the national average.
The percentage puts Oregon among states with the highest percentage of burdened families, including California, Florida and New York, where burdened families consist of as much as 34 percent of the working population.
Housing burdens are a particular problem for lower-income families, who have to choose to pay for housing over other needs, said Andy Wilch, administrator of Housing and Social Services with the Salem Housing Authority.
