A bill in Congress to implement an Internet sales tax is opposed by Oregon Senators and confusing to Oregon business owners.

The Marketplace Fairness Act, which the Senate is scheduled to vote on today, would allow states to require online merchants to charge a sales tax. In sales-tax-free Oregon, however, business owners still are trying to puzzle out what this means.

According to the bill, Oregon-based merchants would have to charge a different state’s sales tax when selling to customers of that state. Merchants would collect the taxes and then send them along to the appropriate state.
