The Marketplace Fairness Act, which the Senate is scheduled to vote on today, would allow states to require online merchants to charge a sales tax. In sales-tax-free Oregon, however, business owners still are trying to puzzle out what this means.
According to the bill, Oregon-based merchants would have to charge a different state’s sales tax when selling to customers of that state. Merchants would collect the taxes and then send them along to the appropriate state.
