Gov. Kitzhaber summoned Oregon leaders from both parties to work out a state budget deal.

“I think hard lines were tested earlier in the session and they just didn’t help,” said Senate Minority Leader Ted Ferrioli, R-John Day. “Democrats and Republicans are going to have to come to the middle,” and there are signs of that happening, he said.

The meeting was the first since early in the session to bring leaders from all sides into the same room with the governor, who plans to take a more active role in helping lawmakers find a go-home compromise. In addition to Ferrioli and Kitzhaber, the meeting included Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, Senate Majority Leader Diane Rosenbaum, D-Portland, and House Minority Leader Mike McLane, R-Powell Butte. House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, participated by phone.
