Oregon lags behind the national average in students taking Advanced Placement courses.
About one in four students in the class of 2012 took an AP exam in Oregon compared to about one in three nationwide. That’s up from about one in 10 Oregon students in 2002.
The courses expose high school students to college-level work and give them a shot at college credit if they pass the exam. High school students who participate in rigorous coursework and earn college credit are more likely to go to college and succeed in college, educators say.
