Only 46% of Oregon public high school students who took the SAT scored at the level officials say indicates a student is prepared for college.

Oregon schools chief Rob Saxton said in an email that the results “confirm what we already knew – far too many of our students are not graduating with the skills they need to be college and career ready.”

The average SAT scores for Oregon’s public school class of 2014 were a smidgen higher than for the class of 2013 but still lower than in 2012, the College Board reported. The average reading score was up 3 points to 519 out of a possible 800. The average math score rose 1 point to 518. And the average writing score was 494 for the fourth straight year.
