Beaverton-based Digimarc will pay $5.6 million for Attributor Corp., a company designed to authenticate e-books and fight online piracy.

The deal promises shareholders of privately held Attributor an additional $900,000 if their business meets unspecified performance objectives this year and in 2013.

Digimarc makes digital identification technology, and derives most of its revenue from licensing its ideas. The company had about $30 million in cash and marketable securities at the end of September.
