Hillsboro-based electron microscope company FEI will begin paying an 8-cent quarterly dividend.

Dividends had been essentially unknown among Oregon’s publicly traded tech companies, which harbored huge cash reserves during the long downturn that followed the dot-com bust.

Theoretically, a dividend returns money to shareholders when a company determines it’s generating more cash than it can usefully re-invest in its own business. Dividends can attract new classes of investors looking for steady returns on their money, and attract investment funds that target dividend stocks.
