Hillsboro microscope company FEI is boosting its quarterly cash dividend from 8 to 12 cents a share.

FEI announced plans to begin paying a dividend a year ago; dividends have lately become popular among the Silicon Forest’s publicly traded companies. Some, like Mentor Graphics and FEI, say the decision to start returning cash to shareholders reflects good financial results. Others, such as Electro Scientific Industries, are finally drawing down cash they’ve been hoarding for years.
