Many fast food chains are following in the footsteps of Portland’s food cart scene and rolling out their own mobile eateries.

Indeed, there’s buzz — in the Portland area as well as other big cities — around food that moves. While for decades food trucks have shuttled through warehouses, industrial areas and office parks, these bigger players take advantage of diners willing to scan Facebook and Twitter to locate lunch. They’re especially willing when it means free food. 

Taco Bell passed free tacos out of its purple trucks at amusement parks and music concerts last summer. Qdoba’s orange Queso Quest — loaded up with food and a comedian from Chicago — offered coupons for a crack at “imaginative queso creations.”
