Salem City Council is reviewing an ordinance to allow food trucks and carts to gather in “pods,” similar to those found in the Portland area.

Many Salem residents support the idea of bringing more mobile food vendors to town and allowing pods to pop-up throughout the city.

But the council may also hear from critics: the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association has urged the city to consider the potential negatives of relaxing the rules. The trade group asserts that mobile food vendors present a number of public health and safety concerns, including fewer inspection requirements than standard restaurant kitchens.
