Royal Caribbean’s Springfield call center is adding 100 jobs, welcome news in a county with more than 17,000 people out of work.

It is especially welcome after Monaco RV’s announcement earlier this month that it will cut 450 jobs at its Coburg factory by early next year.

“Right now, where we are with the economy, it’s always good to hear firms here locally hiring more people,” said Sid Leiken, a Lane County commissioner whose district covers Springfield.

And although customer service call center jobs don’t match the pay and benefits of manufacturing jobs, “the pay differential between call center jobs at good call centers (such as Royal Caribbean, Enterprise and Symantec) and manufacturing is closing,” said Jack Roberts, executive director of Lane Metro Partnership, a business recruitment and retention agency.
