Number of visitors to state’s outdoor attractions tracking to be highest ever despite drought, fires.

Lower fuel costs and a successful Travel Oregon marketing campaign contributed to the record year.

Day-use jumped 9.3 percent at 171 state parks and recreation sites so far in 2015, the highest single-year spike in at least two decades. That increase translates to an additional 3 million people at state parks, from January through August, compared with 2014.

“To see that kind of jump from one year to the next is very unusual,” said Chris Havel, spokesman for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. “We’ve been growing every year since 2011, but this year it started early with a huge spring and has never really slowed down.”
