Sports apparel giant known for targeting major college programs and pro sports leagues now wants Eugene teens wearing the swoosh.

The Eugene School Board is mulling an offer of $300,000 of rebates from Nike in exchange for being students’ exclusive apparel provider.

The agreement would provide up to $15,000 per year to each of the district’s four high schools’ athletics programs to cover the costs of uniforms and equipment. Under the agreement, the district also would receive product discounts of 40 to 45 percent off suggested retail prices on Nike products.

The sports apparel company already has similar contracts with the Portland and Hillsboro school districts, and Eugene district athletics coordinator Kelly Bokn said about 80 percent of high school student-athletes already wear Nike gear.

The board could decide as early as Sept. 23.

In the Register-Guard story, the father of the captain of the ultimate frisbee team bemoaned the possibility of turning his child into a “human billboard.”
