Multnomah County officials are working with Sauvie Island farmers and other shareholders to minimize the impact from visitors to the popular Portland area destination.

The group is discussing whether it should treat the island as a “regional recreation asset” or “rural preserve.”

The plans are up for approval by the Board of Commissioners Thursday morning, and county staff are expecting about 1.5-hours worth of public testimony. During a briefing Tuesday, Commissioner Judy Shiprack said the plan tackles the desires by residents to maintain the island’s rural character while addressing the high demand from Portland-area visitors.

“There’s no question it has become way more dangerous over the last 30 years because of the increased traffic,” said resident Anne Squier, who helped with the plans.

To access the island from Portland, visitors must cross a two-lane bridge that becomes congested when the island is busy.
