BEND BULLETIN: Oregon drivers may have to pay higher fees in the near future.

The increased fees would include some skills tests and fees for obtaining various licenses and permits required to drive in Oregon. The higher costs would generate enough money to launch the first phase in a major IT overhaul that the agency says would bring its computer systems from the 1960s into the present, allowing customers to register vehicles and do more transactions from home.

“If we don’t start working on it now, 10 years from now we might have a serious problem,” said David House, a DMV spokesman.
