State fees for medical marijuana card applications increased dramatically in Oregon on Oct. 1.

Annual application and renewal fees for medical marijuana cards were $100. Food stamp recipients and health plan members were given a discounted rate of $20. Now, the annual fee is $200 and the discounted rate is $100.

As of Oct. 1, the state’s medical marijuana program had grown to 55,000 cardholders. Critics say it has expanded beyond its original premise and is abused by many who don’t really qualify for medical use of the drug.
