MNT: Since 1964, methods used to prevent and reduce smoking have saved an estimated 8 million American lives, increasing their average life spans by approximately 20 years.

January 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the first report by the surgeon general to highlight the harms of tobacco smoking, and the control measures that have been in place since 1964 have saved a total of 157 million years of life across the population, an analysis in the Journal of the American Medical Association found.
