The Portland startup that makes TriMet’s ticketing app won a share of the $2.5 million deal to build a similar system for the Chicago area.
The deal is a partnership between GlobeSherpa and Cubic Transportation Systems, a San Diego company that makes fare-payment systems. Early next year the companies will make an app that enables riders to buy and display tickets on their smartphones, the way Portland commuters do.
In 2016, plans call for a more robust option that would enable riders to use “near field communications” (NFC) technology built into the Apple iPhone 6 and other smartphones to pay for rides by touching their phones to a NFC reader at a turnstyle or bus fare box.
