Portland startup GlobeSherpa raised $1.3 million to help finance a national rollout of its technology that sells transit tickets via smartphones.
Founded in 2010, GlobeSherpa reached a deal with TriMet last year to sell paperless e-tickets. Transit riders show the on-screen ticket to drivers or fare inspectors to prove they’ve paid. The company has nine employees, all in Portland.
TriMet is now testing the technology. Originally slated to roll out this spring, it’s undergoing additional testing and is now set for a broad introduction this summer. GlobeSherpa says it’s close to a similar deal with the City of Portland for the Portland Streetcar, and is negotiating with a half-dozen other U.S. transit agencies.
