Nike opened a water free dyeing facility in Taiwan.
The technology could represent a breakthrough in reducing the massive amounts of water needed to dye fabric. On average, an estimated 100-150 liters of water is needed to process one kg of textiles today. Another rule of thumb: 25 to 40 gallons of water to dye 2.2 pounds of fabric. Industry analysts estimate that more than 39 million tons of polyester will be dyed annually by 2015.
The event follows Nike’s February 2012 announcement that it had taken a strategic stake in Dutch start-up, DyeCoo Textile Systems B.V. The Netherlands-based company invented a technology to replace water, normally used for dyeing, with recyclable carbon dioxide, reducing energy use and eliminating the need for added chemicals in the process. Popular Science last year rated the technology among its “Best of What’s New” products.
