The final steel beams will be placed on the foundation of the new Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Children’s Hospital this week, set to open in 2012.

The long-planned project has brought jobs and investment to Portland’s inner east side.

At 330,000 square feet, the Legacy Emanuel Children’s Hospital is the centerpiece of a $242 million expansion that ranks as Portland’s costliest development on the inner east side since reconstruction of the Lloyd Center shopping mall nearly 20 years ago.

Planned since 2005, the new hospital is designed to provide the latest high-tech medical care for patients from birth to age 18. It will include some seemingly old-fashioned ideas, such as large windows to let patients see the sky above and greenery below, and high-density ceiling tiles to muffle unwanted noise.
