After nearly 10 years of fundraising, construction on a $2.5 million skate park in Eugene is set to begin next week.

Work on the skate park has taken longer than expected to get started, partly because public and private funds were hard to find. And now with a revised price tag of $2.5 million, the project will be much more expensive than originally thought. The city is picking up $2.2 million of the tab. A city official, however, says there are sound reasons for the soaring price.

A dream of supporters since 2004, the 23,025-square-foot skate park is envisioned as a world-class recreation site for local residents that also will draw skateboarders and inline skaters from around the region and the West Coast.
