Gov. Kitzhaber is trying to broker a compromise between Democrats and Republicans to get more money for education by raising taxes and cutting pensions.

He said the package would supply additional money and savings that both parties want.

“It’s an opportunity to follow through on the promise we have made to our citizens about putting children, families and education first,” he told the committee.

“With this package, we can not only create a historic education budget — one not propped up by one-time resources — but we can also sustain it and go forward.”
