More than 3,600 people work at venture-backed startups in Oregon, according to an analysis completed by The Oregonian and the Oregon Employment Department last year. That amounts to less than one-half of 1 percent of private employment statewide.

Still, the startup scene has generated excitement not seen since the dot.com era, partly because people employed in startups also receive about 20 percent more pay than those working the same industry elsewhere.
