Sprint has been rolling out LTE wireless data service in the Portland area.

LTE stands for “long-term evolution,” a class of wireless service many times faster than standard “3G” service. Verizon brought LTE to Portland in 2011, and AT&T followed last fall — just before Apple introduced the iPhone 5, which was the first iPhone equipped for LTE.

Sprint offers LTE in parts of the U.S., but not in Oregon or Washington. Wireless carriers frequently turn on new services incrementally, holding off on an announcement until it’s broadly available across a region.
