Oregon economic development specialists are headed to California for the second year, hoping to lure food processing companies north.

Processing adds value to agricultural products, and jobs as well. State officials believe adding food processing companies would benefit rural communities in particular, because much of Oregon’s farming takes place away from population centers.

In the past, state officials have made the case that Oregon’s diverse crops, lower utility rates and reasonable workers’ compensation costs make the state a good place to do business. California is a logical place to look for companies ready to make a move, said Jerry Gardner, business development manager for the agriculture department.
