Kitzhaber’s plan would trim $865 million. The Democrats said they could save $455 million with more modest cuts lacking in specifics, while Republicans put forth a more aggressive package they said would save at least $1.5 billion and has the support of the Oregon School Boards Association.
“We’re asking our colleagues in the legislature to stretch themselves,” said Rep. Peter Buckley, one of the co-chairs of the Joint Ways and Means Commitee, adding that the budget also “asks current public workers for even more effort.”
