The Oregon Legislature starts business in earnest today, with Democrats holding the lead in both the House of Representatives and Senate for the first time since the 2010 special session.

House and Senate leaders said Friday they hoped to preserve the spirit of bipartisanship created during those years, but House Republicans already felt unsure that the collaborative spirit will prevail this year.

Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, said he has made a conscious effort to create a bipartisan atmosphere in his chamber, which is still closely divided. He has acknowledged that this will be a difficult session, especially given Kitzhaber’s budget instructions, and he said he has tried to give both sides of the aisle important roles.
