Oregon’s largest private company, Jeld-Wen, plans to open a North American headquarters in North Carolina, despite denying rumors of that in September.

Jeld-Wen’s global headquarters will remain in Klamath Falls, where the door-and-window manufacturer was founded 52 years ago. The company plans to add at least 142 jobs in Charlotte, N.C., during the next two years — some of them from Oregon — with an average annual payroll of $13.4 million plus benefits.

The announcement in a news release Thursday from North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue’s office dismayed officials in economically ailing southern Oregon, who said the company had blindsided and misled them. Dennis Linthicum, chairman of the Klamath County board of commissioners, said that unlike Nike Inc., Jeld-Wen didn’t get a special legislative session to keep jobs in Oregon.
