Eugene builder stands up to tough times


Some of Eugene’s most iconic structures were built by Chambers Construction, the company now led and owned by David Hilles: the Hult Center, the U.S. Bank tower, the University of Oregon Moshofsky Indoor Practice Facility and the UO Casanova Center football locker room.

Some of Eugene’s most iconic structures were built by Chambers Construction, the company now led and owned by David Hilles: the Hult Center, the U.S. Bank tower, the University of Oregon Moshofsky Indoor Practice Facility and the UO Casanova Center football locker room.

Richard “Dick” Chambers founded the company in 1955, and Hilles became president when Chambers died in 1986.

Hilles, 63, says he learned a lot from Chambers, whom he calls “my first mentor and one of my most important figures in the construction industry.” Among the lessons learned, “be fair but be firm” — a philosophy Hilles said he follows to this day.
