Vernier Software & Technology will receive a property tax exemption from Beaverton in exchange for spending $2.8 million on hiring and expansion.

The science-education software company is the first business to be approved under the city’s new Enterprise Zone program, which offers three-year to five-year tax exemptions to encourage companies to invest and grow. Vernier plans to increase employment by 10 percent in the next five years.

The city’s Enterprise Zone rules require that three-quarters of Vernier’s employees must receive wages more than double the state minimum wage, which is currently $8.80 an hour.
