Oregon Liquor Control Commission Executive Director Steve Pharo is retiring after more than six years.

Pharo announced Tuesday he is leaving Nov. 16, several months after he resisted a move by Gov. John Kitzhaber to force his resignation.

It’s unclear what effect Pharo’s departure will have on a movement to get the state out of the liquor business or make major changes in the 80-year-old state monopoly on sales of hard liquor. The Legislature has taken up the issue in the past; some critics say they may push for a ballot initiative if the 2013 session does not act.
