Hynix still tax leader


The Hynix plant may have closed last summer, but it is still Lane County’s biggest taxpayer.

Despite closing last summer, the Hynix plant in Eugene has a current property tax bill of $9.7 million and keeps its standing as Lane County’s top taxpayer.

Hynix’s ’09 property tax bill is much higher than usual because $5.4 million of it is a one-time tax penalty assessed when Hynix began to shut down the plant and lay off 1,000 workers. That meant the company no longer qualified for enterprise zone tax waivers, boosting its tax bill to more than double last year’s $4.4 million.

International Paper is a distant second on the list of top taxpayers in Lane County. The pulp and paper company, based in Memphis, Tenn., owes $3.3 million this year, according to the county assessor’s office.
