The Malheur Lumber Co. in John Day will stay open for a few more months thanks to a plan that makes more timber available in the Malheur National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service has agreed to accelerate timber sales and speed up restoration work on the overgrown 1.7 million-acre forest, U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley said Tuesday.
“The livelihood of so many families, the broader Grant County economy and the vitality of our forests are all on the line,” Merkley said in a statement. “Thus this reprieve is joyous and welcome news indeed.”
The 29-year-old mill, owned by Ochoco Lumber Co. in Prineville, had planned to close in November, causing the loss of about 70 jobs.
