While total log and lumber exports were not a record, the amount going to China did set a record, said Xiaoping Zhou, an economist with the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station. While China’s building boom has cooled a bit, it’s still a strong market, she said.
Log exports are controversial, with many arguing that logs should be processed into lumber at U.S. mills rather than shipped overseas. By law, logs from state and federal forests cannot be exported, but private timber owners have increasingly turned to the export market.
